In the week ending April 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 241,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 223,000. The four-week moving average was 226,000, an increase of 5,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 220,500.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.76% for the week ending May 1, down from last week when it averaged 6.81%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 7.22%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.92%, down from last week when it averaged 5.94%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.47%.

Thursday the Dow rose 83.60 points (0.21%) to close at 40,752.96, the Nasdaq rose 264.40 points (1.52%) to close at 17,710.74 and the S&P 500 rose 35.08 points (0.63%) to close at 5,604.14. The Russell 2000 was up 11.74 points (0.60%) to close at 1,975.86, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 320.54 points (0.58%) to close at 55,842.33.
The 10-year Treasury note dropped 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.219%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.721%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1519, Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci—whose works, notably the painting Mona Lisa, were among the most famous in the world—died in Cloux, France. In 1920, the Negro National League, founded by Rube Foster, held its first game; the NNL was considered the first successful professional baseball league for African Americans, and notable players included Cool Papa Bell and Satchel Paige. In 1946, an attempted prison escape by six inmates at Alcatraz resulted in two days of violent fighting. In 1997, British Labor Party leader Tony Blair became prime minister of the United Kingdom, the youngest person to hold the office since 1812. In 2011, Osama bin Laden—founder of al-Qaeda and mastermind of numerous terrorist attacks, notably the September 11, 2001, attacks—was killed by U.S. forces in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
