Wednesday, the National Association of Realtors will report existing home sales for April. Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, the Census bureau will report new home sales and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow rose 134.21 points (0.34%) to close at 40,003.59, the Nasdaq fell 12.36 points (0.07%) to close at 16,685.97 and the S&P 500 rose 6.17 points (0.12%) to close at 5,303.27. The Russell 2000 fell 0.53 points (0.03%) to close at 2,095.72, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 56.68 points (0.11%) to close at 53,273.21.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.426%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 9/32, bringing the yield to 4.563%.

For the week ending May 17, the Dow rose 1.24%, the Nasdaq rose 2.11% and the S&P 500 rose 1.54%. The Russell 2000 rose 1.74%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.53% higher.

In 1784, the Netherlands yielded to the U.K. some of its holdings in India and Indonesia in a treaty signed as part of the Peace of Paris, a collection of treaties to conclude the American Revolution. In 1799, French author Honoré de Balzac was born in Tours, France. In 1806, economist and philosopher John Stuart Mill was born in London. In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Homestead Act. In 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were granted a patent for using copper rivets to strengthen certain areas of trousers, notably pocket corners; the patent was credited with giving rise to blue jeans. In 1882, Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy secretly formed the Triple Alliance, a treaty organization that provided for mutual protection against attacks by other European powers until Italy entered World War I.
