Monday, the Dow fell 196.82 points (0.49%) to close at 39,806.77, the Nasdaq rose 108.91 points (0.65%) to close at 16,794.87 and the S&P 500 rose 4.86 points (0.09%) to close at 5,308.13. The Russell 2000 rose 6.78 points (0.32%) to close at 2,102.50, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 67.32 points (0.13%) to close at 53,340.52.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.450%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.586%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1542, Spanish explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto, the first European to claim he discovered the Mississippi River, died and was buried in the river in present-day Louisiana. In 1844, French painter Henri Rousseau was born in Laval, France. In 1856, during the civil war during a dispute known as “Bleeding Kansas”— fought between proslavery and antislavery advocates in the new U.S. territory of Kansas—the town of Lawrence was terrorized by a pro-slavery mob. In 1871, during a revolt against the French national government of Adolphe Thiers, a period of violence known as “Bloody Week” began. In 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Association of the Red Cross (later the American Red Cross). In 1921, Soviet nuclear theoretical physicist and human rights advocate Andrey Sakharov, winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize for Peace, was born in Moscow. In 1932, aviator Amelia Earhart became the first woman to pilot an airplane solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1972, Michelangelo’s Pietà, a sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ, was attacked and badly damaged in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. In 1991, Indian politician Rajiv Gandhi, the country’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated in a suicide bombing attack. In 2000, British author Dame Barbara Cartland died at age 98 in England. In 2017, after years of declining attendance—in part due to animal rights protests—the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus gave what it said would be its final performance. (In 2023 the circus returned with an animal-free show.)
