Tuesday, the Dow fell 114.83 points (0.27%) to close at 42,677.24, the Nasdaq fell 72.75 points (0.38%) to close at 19,142.71 and the S&P 500 fell 23.14 points (0.39%) to close at 5,940.46. The Russell 2000 rose 1.15 points (0.05%) to close at 2,105.58, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 215.21 points (0.36%) to close at 59,346.16.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.491%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.979%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1871, the French Army put down an insurrection by the Paris Commune against the French national government of President Adolphe Thiers, beginning a period of violence known as “Bloody Week.” In 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Association of the Red Cross (later the American Red Cross). In 1932, aviator Amelia Earhart became the first woman to pilot an airplane solo across the Atlantic Ocean. In 1972, Michelangelo’s Pietà, a sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary supporting the body of the dead Christ, was attacked and badly damaged in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. In 1991, Indian politician Rajiv Gandhi, the country’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989, was assassinated in a suicide bombing attack. In 2000, British author Dame Barbara Cartland died at age 98 in England. In 2017, after years of declining attendance—in part due to animal rights protests—the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus gave what it said would be its final performance. (In 2023, the circus returned with an animal-free show).
