Tuesday, the Dow rose 66.22 points (0.17%) to close at 39,872.99, the Nasdaq rose 37.75 points (0.22%) to close at 16,832.62 and the S&P 500 rose 13.28 points (0.25%) to close at 5,321.41. The Russell 2000 fell 4.14 points (0.20%) to close at 2,098.36, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 94.13 points (0.18%) to close at 53,434.65. 

The 10-year Treasury note increased 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.421%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.549%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1885, French poet, novelist and dramatist Victor Hugo, who was the most important of the French Romantic writers, died at age 83. In 1939, Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy signed the Pact of Steel, a full military and political alliance between their countries. In 1942, Mexico entered World War II by declaring war on Germany, Italy and Japan. In 1960, one of the largest earthquakes on record struck the southern coast of Chile, killing about 5,700 people and creating tsunamis that caused death and destruction in distant Pacific coastal areas, notably Japan and Hawaii. In 1972, Richard Nixon arrived in Moscow, the first visit by a U.S. president to the Soviet Union. In 1992, comedian Johnny Carson, considered by many to be the king of late-night television, made his final appearance as host of “The Tonight Show.” In 2011, one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history struck Joplin, Missouri, causing massive damage and killing some 160 people.
