New orders for manufactured durable goods in March decreased $36.0 billion or 14.4% to $213.2 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This decrease, down following three consecutive monthly increases, followed a 1.1% February increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.2%. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 15.8%. Transportation equipment, down two of the last three months, led the decrease, $35.6 billion or 41.0% to $51.2 billion.

Yesterday, the Dow was up 26.07 points (0.11%) at 23,749.76, the NASDAQ climbed 105.77 points (1.23%) to 8,710.72, and the S&P 500 closed 12.03 points (0.43%) higher at 2,842.74. The Russell 2000 increased 3.49 points (0.28%) to 1,263.97, and the Wilshire 5000 gained 142.94 points (0.50%) to finish at 28,643.54.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 1/32, increasing its yield to 0.627%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 29/32, bringing its yield up to 1.277%.
