Tuesday the Dow fell 389.83 points (0.95%) to close at 40,82900, the Nasdaq fell 154.58 points (0.87%) to close at 17,689.66 and the S&P 500 fell 43.47 points (0.77%) to close at 5,606.91. The Russell 2000 fell 21.07 points (1.05%) to close at 1,983.19, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 448.81 points (0.80%) to close at 55, 944.20. 

The 10-year Treasury note rose 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.302%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.802%.

ON THIS DATE:In 1919, Argentine political figure Eva Perón—who, as the wife of President Juan Perón, became a powerful though unofficial leader—was born. In 1945, a German delegation that included General Alfred Jodl went to U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s headquarters in Reims, France, and signed the surrender documents that ended the European phase of World War II. In 1946, Sony Corporation, a major Japanese manufacturer of consumer electronics products, was founded by Ibuka Masaru and Morita Akio. In 1954, Viet Minh General Vo Nguyen Giap took the French by surprise at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, surrounding their base with 40,000 men and employing heavy artillery to capture it during the First Indochina War. In 1992, more than 200 years after it was first proposed, the 27th Amendment garnered the necessary votes as Michigan ratified it; the amendment involved salary increases to members of the U.S. Congress. In 2002, on the 25th anniversary of his Kentucky Derby win, Seattle Slew, the first undefeated racehorse ever to win the U.S. Triple Crown, died.
