Wednesday the Dow rose 284.97 points (0.7%) to close at 41,113.97, the Nasdaq rose 48.5 points (0.27%) to close at 17,738.16 and the S&P 500 rose 24.37 points (0.43%) to close at 5,631.28. The Russell 2000 rose 6.46 points (0.33%) to close at 1,989.65, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 225.76 points (0.4%) to close at 56,169.96.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 8/32, bringing the yield to 4.282%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.787%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1945, following Germany’s unconditional surrender, World War II in Europe officially ended at midnight on this day, although the war in the Pacific continued until the Japanese surrender in September. In 1950, police in Silkeborg, Denmark, were alerted to the discovery of a corpse in a bog; it was revealed to be a remarkably preserved bog body and was given the name Tollund Man. In 1970, a month after Paul McCartney announced that he had left the Beatles, the British rock group released Let It Be, their last original studio album to hit the record shops. In 1980, following a global vaccination program, the WHO officially declared that smallpox was eradicated; for centuries, the acute infectious disease was one of the world’s most-dreaded plagues. In 1999, Nancy Mace became the first woman to graduate from The Citadel, a military college in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2012, American artist Maurice Sendak, who was best known for his illustrated children’s books, died at age 83.
