In the week ending May 3, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 228,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 241,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 227,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 226,000.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.76% for the week ending May 8 unchanged from last week, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 7.09%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.89%, down from last week when it averaged 5.94%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.38%.
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday the Dow rose 254.48 points (0.62%) to close at 41,368.45, the Nasdaq rose 189.98 points (1.07%) to close at 17,928.14 and the S&P 500 rose 32.66 points (0.58%) to close at 5,663.94. The Russell 2000 rose 36.75 points (1.85%) to close at 2,026.41, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 414.38 points (0.74%) to close at 56,587.66.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 30/32, bringing the yield to 4.381%. The 30-year Treasury bond dropped 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.802%.
