Wednesday, the Dow lost 646.89 points (1.95%) to close at 32,513.94, the Nasdaq decreased 263.02 points (2.48%) to close at 10,353.17 and the S&P 500 lost 79.54 points (2.08%) to end trading at 3,748.57. The Russell 2000 decreased 48.53 points (2.68%) to close at 1,760.40 and the Wilshire 5000 lost 845.00 points (2.21%) to close at 37,306.44.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 24/32, bringing the yield down to 4.096%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield down to 4.275%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1775, the U.S. Marine Corps was founded after the Continental Congress ordered that two battalions of marines be raised for service during the American Revolution. In 1898, The multiracial Fusionist (Republican and Populist) city government of Wilmington, N.C., was violently overthrown, and as many as 60 Black Americans were killed in a premeditated murder spree that was the culmination of an organized months-long statewide campaign by white supremacists. In 1928, the WWI novel, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” written by Erich Maria Remarque, was published. In 1951, direct-dial, coast-to-coast telephone service began when the mayor of Englewood, N.J., called his counterpart in Alameda, California. In 1969, the TV series Sesame Street debuted. In 1975, the American freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm on Lake Superior, killing all 29 aboard; its mysterious demise inspired a Gordon Lightfoot song. In 1982, in Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was opened to visitors. In 1997, WorldCom Inc. acquired MCI Communication Corporation in, at the time, the largest merger in U.S. history valued at $37 billion.
