September sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $498.6 billion, virtually unchanged from the revised August level, but down 0.6% from the September 2018 level. The July to August percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of virtually unchanged to down 0.1%. THE ECONOMIC WEEK AHEAD: Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) will reveals the consumer price index for October. Thursday, the Labor Department will issue its initial claims report, and the BLS will reveal the producer price index for October. Friday, the Census Bureau will report about retail sales for October and business trade for September.

Friday, the Dow was up 6.44 points (0.2%) at 27,681.24, the NASDAQ climbed 40.80 points (0.48%) to 8,475.31, and the S&P 500 increased 7.90 points (0.26%) to 3,093.08. The Russell 2000 gained 4.87 points (0.31%) to finish at 1,598.86, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 87.83 points (0.28%) higher at 31,505.09. The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 2/32, increasing its yield to 1.942%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 15/32, bringing its yield up to 2.425%. WEEK’S WORTH: For the week ending November 8, the Dow climbed 1.22%, the NASDAQ gained 1.06%, and the S&P 500 finished 0.85% higher. The Russell 2000 was up 0.60%, and the Wilshire 5000 increased 0.76%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1831, Nat Turner, a slave and educated minister, was hanged in Jerusalem, Virginia, after inciting a violent slave uprising. In 1851, the telescope was patented by Alvan Clark. This day became recognized as Veteran’s Day in the United States. In 1921, the Tomb of the Unknowns was dedicated at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia by President Warren Harding. In 1940, the Jeep made its debut. In 1946, the New York Knickerbockers (now the Knicks) played their first game at Madison Square Garden. In 1972, the Army turned over its base at Long Bihn to the South Vietnamese army. The event symbolized the end of direct involvement in the Vietnam War by the U.S. military. In 1986, Sperry Rand and Burroughs merged to form “Unisys,” becoming the second largest computer company. In 1993, in Washington, D.C., the Vietnam Women’s Memorial was dedicated to honor the more than 11,000 women who had served in the Vietnam War.
