Tuesday, the Dow fell 382.15 points (0.86%) to close at 43,910.98, the Nasdaq fell 17.36 points (0.09%) to close at 19,281.40 and the S&P 500 fell 17.36 points (0.29%) to close at 5,983.99. The Russell 2000 fell 43.13 points (1.77%) to close at 2,391.85, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 240.33 points (0.40%) to close at 60,253.196.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.432%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.569%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1916, during World War I, a costly four-month Allied offensive against German positions along the Somme River ended. In 1918, Egyptian patriot Saad Zaghloul formed a nationalist political party that was instrumental in gaining Egyptian independence from Britain. In 1940, the animated film “Fantasia” had its first public screening, and it became one of Disney’s more controversial works. In 1985, the volcano Mount Ruiz in Cordillera Central of the Andes, in west-central Colombia, erupted twice, burying the town of Armero and killing an estimated 25,000 people. In 2001, on the heels of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan prompted by the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, the army of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance captured the capital city of Kabul. In 2015, terrorists staged coordinated attacks in Paris and surrounding areas, the deadliest occurring at the Bataclan theater and concert; in all, at least 130 people were killed and more than 350 were wounded.
