Monday, the Dow rose 54.77 points (0.16%) to close at 34,337.87, the Nasdaq fell 30.37 points (0.22%) to close at 13,767.74 and the S&P 500 fell 3.69 points (0.08%) to close at 4,411.55. The Russell 2000 rose 0.18 points (0.01%) to close at 1,705.50, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 30.38 points (0.07%) to close at 44,158.61.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.636%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.758%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1851, Harper & Brothers published Herman Melville’s novel “Moby-Dick.” In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly started her around-the-world race against the record of Phileas Fogg, hero of Jules Verne’s book “Around the World in Eighty Days,” she completed the journey in slightly more than 72 days. In 1915, educator, reformer and first president and principal developer of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University), Booker T. Washington, the most influential spokesman for African Americans in the late 19th and the early 20th century, died at age 59. In 1960, 6-year-old Ruby Bridges began attending William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, as one of the youngest of a group of African American students to integrate schools in the U.S. South. In 1969, Apollo 12 was launched, carrying a crew of Charles Conrad, Jr., Richard F. Gordon, Jr. and Alan L. Bean, and five days later, the mission made the second landing on the Moon. In 1972, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 1,000 for the first time. In 2002, Representative Nancy Pelosi, D-California, became the first woman to be named leader of either party in either house of Congress when she was named the minority leader. In 2014, politician Jane Byrne, the first woman to serve as mayor of Chicago, died at age 81.
