Construction spending during September was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,573.6 billion, 0.5% below the revised August estimate of $1,582.0 billion, the Census Bureau reported. The September figure is 7.8% above the September 2020 estimate of $1,459.3 billion. During the first nine months of this year, construction spending amounted to $1,177.5 billion, 7.1% above the $1,099.8 billion for the same period in 2020.

Yesterday, the Dow increased 94.28 points (0.26%) to 35,913.84, the Nasdaq closed 97.53 points (0.63%) higher at 15,595.92, and the S&P 500 was up 8.29 points (0.18%) at 4,613.67. The Russell 2000 climbed 60.93 points (2.65%) to 2,358.12, and the Wilshire 5000 gained 245.81 points (0.51%) to finish at 48,040.90.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, with its yield up to 1.562%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 29/32, increasing its yield to 1.964%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1783, U.S. Gen. George Washington gave his “Farewell Address to the Army” near Princeton, New Jersey. In 1867, “Harpers Bazaar” magazine was founded. In 1889, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted into the union as the 39th and 40th states. In 1920, the first commercial radio station in the U.S., KDKA of Pittsburgh, began regular broadcasting. In 1948, in one of the greatest upsets in presidential election history, Democratic incumbent Harry S. Truman defeated his Republican challenger, Governor Thomas E. Dewey of New York, by just over two million popular votes.
