Monday, the Dow rose 203.76 points (0.58%) to close at 35,151.04, the Nasdaq rose 159.05 points (1.13%) to close at 14,284.53 and the S&P 500 rose 33.36 points (0.74%) to close at 4,547.38. The Russell 2000 rose 9.32 points (0.52%) to close at 1,807.08, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 330.01 points (0.73%) to close at 45,642.96.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.422. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 3/22, bringing the yield to 4.572%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1877, Thomas Edison announced his invention of the phonograph, a way to record and play back sound. In 1920, Major League Baseball player Stan Musial, considered one of the game’s greatest hitters, was born. In 1922, the horror classic “Frankenstein,” based on a stage adaptation of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s 1818 novel, was released in the U.S. The film helped make the hulking monster, portrayed by actor Boris Karloff, one of the most recognizable characters in film history. In 1964, the Verrazzano- (originally Verrazano-) Narrows Bridge, spanning New York Harbor from Brooklyn to Staten Island, opened to traffic. In 1995, a peace agreement, known as the Dayton Accords, was reached by the presidents of Bosnia and Herzegovina; Croatia; and Serbia, ending the Bosnian War. In 2000, the United Farm Workers called off the boycott of growers of California table grapes begun in 1984 by union organizer Cesar Chavez, saying the goals of the strike had been met. In 2002, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization extended an official invitation to Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia to begin accession talks to join the alliance. In 2017, after 37 years as leader of Zimbabwe—first as prime minister and later as president—Robert Mugabe resigned from office as the parliament began impeachment proceedings against him.
