|
Sales of new single‐family houses in October 2023 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 679,000, according to estimates released jointly today by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 5.6% below the revised September rate of 719,000 but is 17.7% above the October 2022 estimate of 577,000. This is 5.6% below the revised September 2023 estimate of 719,000.

Monday, the Dow fell 56.68 points (0.16%) to close at 35,333.47, the Nasdaq fell 9.83 points (0.07%) to close at 14,241.02 and the S&P 500 fell 8.91 points (0.20%) to close at 4,550.43. The Russell 2000 fell 6.35 points (0.35%) to close at 1,801.15, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 90.10 points (0.20%) to close at 45,676.78.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.391%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.537%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1912, Albanian national delegates, led by Ismail Qemal, issued the Vlorë proclamation, which declared Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire. In 1914, the New York Stock Exchange reopened for bond trading after nearly four months, the longest stoppage in the exchange’s history. The outbreak of World War I in Europe forced the NYSE to shut its doors on July 31, 1914, after large numbers of foreign investors began selling their holdings in hopes of raising money for the war effort. In 1919, Lady Astor, born in the U.S. as Nancy Witcher Langhorne, became the first woman to sit in the British House of Commons. In 1943, during World War II, the Tehran Conference was attended by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin, at which Stalin pressed for an invasion of France. in 1960, Mauritania declared its independence and left the French Community. In 1961, football player Ernie Davis of Syracuse University became the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. In 1962, comedian and actor Jon Stewart, who hosted the satiric television news program “The Daily Show,” was born. In 1989, Queen Latifah released her debut album, “All Hail the Queen,” and its success helped redefine the traditionally male genre of hip-hop. In 2012, director Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the first in a series of movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, had its world premiere in New Zealand.
