Wednesday, the Dow rose 13.44 points (0.04%) to close at 35,430.42, the Nasdaq fell 23.27 points (0.16%) to close at 14,258.49 and the S&P 500 fell 4.31 points (0.09%) to close at 4,550.58. The Russell 2000 rose 11.00 points (0.61%) to close at 1,803.81, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 17.13 points (0.037%) to close at 45,725.57.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.265%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1 23/32, bringing the yield to 4.442%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1874, British statesman, orator and author Sir Winston Churchill, who as prime minister rallied the British people during World War II and led his country from the brink of defeat to victory, was born in Oxfordshire, England. In 1924, politician Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress, was born in Brooklyn, New York. In 1936, a fire virtually destroyed the Crystal Palace building in London, the glass and iron exhibition hall that housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. In 1939, after Finland refused to grant the Soviet Union a naval base and other concessions in the fall of 1939, Soviet troops attacked Finland on several fronts, initiating the Russo-Finnish War. In 1966, Barbados achieved full independence from the U.K. In 1982, singer and songwriter Michael Jackson released “Thriller,” which became the best-selling album in the world and won a record-setting eight Grammy Awards.
