Tuesday, the Dow rose 427.28 points (1.02%) to close at 42,221.88, the Nasdaq rose 259.19 points (1.43%) to close at 18,439.17 and the S&P 500 rose 70.07 points (1.23%) to close at 5,782.76. The Russell 2000 rose 41.81 points (1.88%) to close at 2,260.84, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 746.37 points (1.30%) to close at 58,024.35.
The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.285%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.436%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1860, Americans elected as their president Abraham Lincoln, whose victory led to the secession of Southern states and the long and bloody Civil War that lasted until 1865 and ended slavery in the U.S. In 1887, professional baseball player Walter Johnson, who had perhaps the greatest fastball in the history of the game, was born in Humboldt, Kansas. In 1888, Benjamin Harrison of the Republican Party was elected U.S. president by an electoral majority despite losing the popular vote by more than 90,000 to his Democratic opponent, Grover Cleveland. In 1917, the second phase of the Russian Revolution of 1917 began as the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan won reelection in a landslide victory over Democratic candidate Walter F. Mondale. In 1995, Art Modell, the owner of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, announced that he was moving the team to Baltimore, which enraged sportswriters and Cleveland fans. In 2012, politician Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin, became the first openly gay person to be elected to the U.S. Senate.
