The Russell 2000 fell 22.77 points (1.29%) to close at 1,737.94, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 0.63 points (0.00%) to close at 43,792.74.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.654%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 7/32, bringing the yield to 4.814%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1962, after losing the governor’s election in California, Richard Nixon gave what he called his “last press conference,” telling reporters that “you won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore”; he was elected president six years later. In 1967, lawyer and politician Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, becoming the first African American to lead a major U.S. city. In 1989, politician Douglas Wilder was elected governor of Virginia, becoming the first African American to win a U.S. gubernatorial election. In 1991, professional basketball player Magic Johnson announced that he was HIV-positive and was immediately retiring from the sport; he later played part of the 1995-96 season. In 1996, NASA launched Mars Global Surveyor, a robotic spacecraft design to carry out a long-term study of the planet; contact with the spacecraft was lost in 2006. In 2000, the U.S. presidential election ended in statistical tie between Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush, only to be settled on December 12 by the Supreme Court after a bitter legal dispute. The same year, politician Hillary Clinton was elected to the Senate, becoming the first first lady to win elective office. In 2016, lawyer and public official Janet Reno, who was the first female attorney general of the U.S., died at age 78. The same year, Canadian musician Leonard Cohen, a hugely influential singer and songwriter, died at age 82.
