September 2023 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $678.1 billion, up 2.2% from the revised August level and were up 0.9% from the revised September 2022 level, the Census Bureau announced. The July 2023 to August 2023 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of up 1.8% to up 2.0%.

Wednesday, the Dow fell 40.33 points (0.12%) to close at 34,112.27, the Nasdaq rose 10.56 points (0.08%) to close at 13,650.41 and the S&P 500 rose 4.40 points (0.10%) to close at 4,382.78. The Russell 2000 lost 19.08 points (1.10%) to close at 1,714.07, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index gained 2.01 points (0.00%) to close at 43,927.79.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.497%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.617%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1922, Albert Einstein was named the winner of the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effects; the Nobel committee had delayed awarding the 1921 physics prize until 1922. In 1923, the Beer Hall Putsch led by Adolf Hitler ended after 16 Nazis were killed on a march toward the Marienplatz in the center of Munich, Germany. In 1936, beginning on this night, called Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass,” some 48 hours of Nazi-orchestrated anti-Jewish violence erupted throughout Germany and Austria, resulting in the destruction and vandalizing of synagogues and Jewish businesses and the deaths of at least 91 Jews. In 1943, the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration was created by a 44-nation agreement. In 1953, Cambodia became independent from France. In 1984, Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” was released in American theaters, introducing moviegoers to the villain Freddy Krueger; considered a horror classic, it spun off a number of sequels. In 1985, Garry Kasparov, who was 22 years old, defeated Anatoly Karpov to become the youngest male world chess champion. In 1989, the Berlin Wall, long a symbol of the Cold War, erected in 1961 and eventually extending 28 miles to divide the western and eastern sections of Berlin, was opened by the East German government. In 1996, Evander Holyfield scored a technical knockout of Mike Tyson to win the heavyweight boxing championship for a third time. In 2004, Swedish writer and activist Stieg Larsson died from a heart attack in Stockholm, a year before “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the first installment in his internationally acclaimed Millennium series, was published.
