Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.

Friday, the Dow rose 365.62 points (0.86%) to close at 42,819.62, the Nasdaq rose 74.14 points (0.41%) to close at 18,356.19 and the S&P 500 was higher by 33.32 points (0.58%) to close at 5,813.37. The Russell 2000 rose 40.30 points (1.84%) to close at 2,228.72, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 443.23 points (0.77%) to close at 58,213.07.
The 10-year Treasury note dropped 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.099%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.407%.
In the week ending October 4, the Dow rose 1.10%, the Nasdaq rose 1.20% and the S&P 500 gained 1.08%. The Russell 2000 rose 0.72%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.17% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1908, the Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers to win the team’s second World Series championship; they did not claim their third title until 2016. In 1926, English humorist A.A. Milne published the children’s book “Winnie-the-Pooh. In 1943, some 300 Jewish laborers at Sobibor extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland staged a revolt, killing several SS supervisors and Ukrainian guards; many inmates died, and the camp was subsequently dismantled. In 1947, test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier. In 1964, Baptist minister and social activist Martin Luther King Jr. was named the winner of the Nobel Prize for peace, cited for his work involving civil rights and social justice. In 1973, Prime Minister Thanom Kittikachorn of Thailand was forced to step down following huge public demonstrations. In 1994, Naguib Mahfouz, the 83-year novelist and 1988 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, was stabbed by Islamic militants in Cairo but survived. In 2012, two days after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport, the space shuttle Endeavor reached its final destination, the California Space Center; its 12-mile journey through the city had required trees to be cut down and signs to be removed.
