Monday, the Dow rose 314.25 points (0.93%) to close at 33,984.54, the Nasdaq rose 160.75 points (1.20%) to close at 13,567.98 and the S&P 500 rose 45.85 points (1.06%) to close at 4,373.63. The Russell 2000 rose 27.35 points (1.59%) to close at 1,747.06, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 494.73 points (1.14%) to close at 43,938.21.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.714%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 1 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.856%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1777, British General John Burgoyne surrendered his troops following defeat in the Second Battle of Saratoga during the American Revolution. In 1854, British and French troops began the Siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War. In 1918, actor Rita Hayworth was born. In 1939, the film “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” starring James Stewart, had its world premiere. In 1968, the action film “Bullitt” was released. In 1972, rapper and actor Eminem was born. In 1979, Mother Teresa, founder of a Roman Catholic order of women dedicated to the poor and particularly to the destitute of India, was named the recipient of that year’s Nobel Prize for Peace. In 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake rocked northern California during Game 3 of the Major League Baseball World Series between the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics at Candlestick Park, forcing postponement of the matchup. The series resumed 10 days after the earthquake, which killed 67, injured more than 3,700 and caused an estimated $5 billion in property damage. In 2018, recreational marijuana became legal in Canada.
