Monday, the Dow gained 550.99 points (1.86%) to close at 30,185.82, the Nasdaq increased 354.41 points (3.43%) to end trading at 10,675.80 and the S&P 500 gained 94.88 points (2.65%) to close at 3,677.95. The Russell 2000 was up 53.35 points (3.17%) to close at 1,735.75 and the Wilshire 5000 gained 988.38 points (2.76%) to close at 36,767.01.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 1/32, bringing the yield down to 4.013%. The price of the 30-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield up to 4.021%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1767, the Mason-Dixon line was agreed upon as the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania. In 1867, the U.S. formally acquired Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre. In 1898, one year after Puerto Rico won self-rule from Spain, U.S. troops raised the flag over the Caribbean nation to formalize U.S. authority over the island. In 1931, inventor Thomas Edison, died in West Orange, N.J. In 1950, Connie Mack announced that he was going to retire after 50 seasons as the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1977, during the sixth game of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees outfielder Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in a row off of three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers. In 2007, after eight years of self-imposed exile, Benazir Bhutto—who, as two-time prime minister (1988–90 and 1993–96) of Pakistan, was the first woman leader of a Muslim nation in modern history—returned to her home country, and hours later she was nearly killed when her motorcade was bombed in Karachi; she was assassinated in December.
