Tuesday, the Dow fell 173.18 points (0.41%) to close at 42,156.97, the Nasdaq fell 278.81 points (1.53%) to close at 17,910.36 and the S&P 500 fell 53.73 points (0.93%) to close at 5,708.75. The Russell 2000 lost 32.94 points (1.48%) to close at 2,197.03, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 546.15 points (0.95%) to close at 57,090.80.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 26/32, bringing the yield to 3.737%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.073%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1836, naturalist Charles Darwin returned to England after a five-year journey on the HMS Beagle, on which he gathered the specimens and observations that led to his theory of evolution by natural selection. In 1959, the science-fiction anthology TV series “The Twilight Zone” debuted and became hugely popular, known for its unexpected plot twists and moral lessons; the show was created by Rod Serling. In 1967, lawyer and civil rights activist Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as an associate of justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming its first African American member. In 1985, actor Rock Hudson died, becoming one of the first Hollywood celebrities known to succumb to AIDS-related complications; the extensive publicity surrounding his death drew attention to the disease. In 2005, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson—who was best known for a cycle of plays, each set in a different decade of the 20th century, about Black American life—died at age 60. In 2017, singer and songwriter Tom Petty, whose roots-oriented guitar rock arose from the new-wave movement of the late 1970s and resulted in a string of hit singles and albums, died at age 66.
