Monday, the Dow fell 344.31 points (0.80%) to close at 42,931.60, the Nasdaq rose 50.45 points (0.27%) to close at 18,540.01 and the S&P 500 fell 10.69 points (0.18%) to close at 5,853.98. The Russell 2000 fell 36.38 points (1.60%) to close at 2,239.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 184.82 points (0.31%) to close at 58,578.57.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 33/32, bringing the yield to 4.206%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.504%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1856, after helping defeat Mexico in the Texas Revolution, Sam Houston was inaugurated as the first president of the Republic of Texas. In 1906, French artist Paul Cezanne, considered one of the greatest of the Post-Impressionists, died at the age 67. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy alerted Americans to the Cuban missile crisis, declaring a naval blockade to prevent further missile shipments to the island country 90 miles off the coast of the U.S. In 1964, French philosopher and writer Jean-Paul Sartre was announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature; however, he became the first person to decline the award. In 2008, Chandrayaan-1, India’s first lunar space probe, was launched, and it later found water in the Moon’s atmosphere. In 2010, WikiLeaks, a website founded by Julian Assange that functioned as a clearinghouse for classified or otherwise privileged information, released thousands of U.S. documents relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
