Sales of new single-family houses in September 2023 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 759,000,the Census Bureau reported. This is 12.3% above the revised August 2023 estimate of 676,000.

Wednesday, the Dow fell 105.45 points (0.32%) to close at 33,035.93, the Nasdaq fell 318.65 points (2.43%) to close at 12,821.22 and the S&P 500 fell 60.91 points (1.43%) to close at 4,186.77. The Russell 2000 fell 28.07 points (1.67%) to close at 1,651.43, and the FT Wilshire 5000 fell 649.61 points (1.52%) to close at 41,962.53.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.961%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 5/32, bringing the yield to 5.089%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1813, British and U.S. troops clashed in the Battle of Châteauguay during the War of 1812. In 1825 the Erie Canal, the first navigable waterway connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean, via the Hudson River, officially opened; its success propelled New York City into a major commercial center and encouraged canal construction throughout the U.S. In 1881, a feud between the Earp brothers (Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan) and an outlaw gang led by Ike Clanton escalated into a shootout at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. In 1958, America’s first jet airliner, the Boeing 707, entered service for Pan American World Airways. In 1970, following an absence of more than three years, boxer Muhammad Ali returned to the ring, defeating Jerry Quarry; Ali had been barred from fighting after he refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. In 1984, the action thriller “The Terminator” was released in the U.S; the successful film helped make actor Arnold Schwarzenegger a star and established director James Cameron. In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act, an anti-terrorism law drawn up in response to the attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros to win the team’s first Major League Baseball World Series title since 1917.
