Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.14% for the week ending October 28, up from last week when it averaged 3.09%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 2.81%. Interest on a 15-year FRM averaged 2.37%, up from last week when it averaged 2.33%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.32%.

In the week ending October 23, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 281,000, a decrease of 10,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 291,000, the Labor Department reported. This is the lowest level for initial claims since March 14, 2020, when it was 256,000. The four-week moving average was 299,250, a decrease of 20,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 320,000. This is the lowest level for this average since March 14, 2020, when it was 225,500.

Thursday, the Dow gained 239.79 points (0.68%) to finish at 35,730.48, the Nasdaq closed 212.28 points (1.39%) higher at 15,448.12, and the S&P 500 was up 44.74 points (0.98%) at 4,596.42. The Russell 2000 increased 45.49 points (2.02%) to 2,297.98, and the Wilshire 5000 climbed 531.19 points (1.13%) to 47,717.61.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 2/32, increasing its yield to 1.577%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 26/32, bringing its yield up to 1.975%.
