Monday, the Dow rose 273.17 points (0.65%) to close at 42,387.57, the Nasdaq rose 48.58 points (0.26%) to close at 18,567.19 and the S&P 500 rose 15.40 points (0.27%) to close at 5,823.52. The Russell 2000 rose 36.07 points (1.63%) to close at 2,244.07, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 228.02 points (0.39%) to close at 58,308.43. 

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 25/32, bringing the yield to 4.286%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.531%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1901, anarchist Leon Czolgosz was executed for the assassination of U.S. President William McKinley. In 1929, just five days after nearly 13 million shares of U.S. stock were sold in one day, an additional 16 million shares were sold this day, called “Black Friday,” further fueling the crisis known as the Great Depression. In 1923, the Republic of Turkey was established, largely through the efforts of Kemal Ataturk, who is considered the country’s founder and served as its first president. In 1950, King Gustav V of Sweden, a strong proponent of Swedish neutrality during World War II, died in Stockholm. In 1956, Israel’s army attacked Egypt in the Sinai Peninsula in a fight for control of the Suez Canal area. In 1998, Hurricane Mitch made landfall, hitting northern Honduras; one of the deadliest Atlantic hurricanes on record, it caused some 11,000 deaths in Central America. In 2015, it was announced that China was ending its one-child policy; beginning in 2016, couples could have two children.
