The Russell 2000 fell 2.03 points (0.09%) to close at 2,195.01, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 9.72 points (0.02%) to close at 57,100.52.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 26/32, bringing the yield to 3.783%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.127%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1945, the May-Johnson bill, keeping atomic research a secret and establishing security regulations, was introduced into Congress; although it never became law, the debate over the proposed legislation resulted in the passage of the Atomic Energy Act. In 1952, the first British atomic weapons test, called Hurricane, was successfully conducted abroad the frigate HMS Plym. In 1961, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” a pioneer of the sitcom genre, began airing on CBS. In 1969, singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani, who came to fame in the 1990s as the lead singer of the band No Doubt before starting a solo career, was born. In 1990, after four years of Cold War division and with pressure from the German chancellor Helmut Kohl, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev agreed to a unified Germany within NATO, leading to Germany’s reunification. In 1995, a jury found O.J. Simpson not guilty of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. In 2004, actress Janet Leigh—who was best remembered for her performance in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”—died at the age of 77.
