Wednesday, the Dow rose 39.55 points (0.09%) to close at 42,196.52, the Nasdaq rose 14.76 points (0.08%) to close at 17,925.12 and the S&P 500 rose 0.79 points (0.01%) to close at 5,709.54. The Russell 2000 fell 2.03 points (0.09%) to close at 2,195.01, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 9.72 points (0.02%) to close at 57,100.52.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 26/32, bringing the yield to 3.783%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.127%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1945, the May-Johnson bill, keeping atomic research a secret and establishing security regulations, was introduced into Congress; although it never became law, the debate over the proposed legislation resulted in the passage of the Atomic Energy Act. In 1952, the first British atomic weapons test, called Hurricane, was successfully conducted abroad the frigate HMS Plym.
