In the week ending September 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 225,000, an increase of 6,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 219,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average moving average was 224,250, a decrease of 750 from the previous week’s revised average of o 225,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.12% for the week ending October 3, up from last week when it averaged 6.08%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 7.49%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.25%, up from last week when it averaged 5.16%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.78%.

Thursday, the Dow fell 184.93 points (0.44%) to close at 42,011,59, the Nasdaq dropped 6.65 points (0.04%) to close at 17,918.48 and the S&P 500 fell 9.60 points (0.17%) to close at 5,699.94. The Russell 2000 fell 14.86 points (0.68%) to close at 2,180.15, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index lost 117.34 points (0.21%) to close at 56,983.18.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.864%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.186%.

In 1970, American singer Janis Joplin, who was known for her fierce and uninhibited musical style, died of an accidental overdose. In 2014, Haitian politician Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, who was president of Haiti from 1971 to 1986, died in Port-au-Prince while he was on trial for alleged human rights abuses.
