Wednesday, the Dow rose 127.17 points (0.39%) to close at 33,129.55, the Nasdaq rose 176.54 points (1.35%) to close at 13,236.01 and the S&P 500 rose 34.30 points (0.81%) to close at 4,263.75. The Russell 2000 rose 1.86 points (0.11%) to close at 1,729.01, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 326.79 points (0.77%) to close at 42,876.22.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.742%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 31/21, bringing the yield to 4.866%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1813, during the War of 1812, a British army with some 1,000 Native American allies under the famed leader Tecumseh was defeated by U.S. troops in the Battle of the Thames in what is now Ontario, Canada. In 1947, President Harry Truman delivered the first-ever televised presidential address from the White House, asking Americans to cut back on their use of grain in order to help starving Europeans. In 1962, the first installment in the James Bond film series, “Dr. No,” premiered; the British spy film was adapted from Ian Fleming’s novel and starred Sean Connery. In 1969, the British television series ”Monty Python’s Flying Circus” debuted on the BBC and proved to be a watershed for TV comedy around the world.
