Monday, the Dow rose 484.18 points (1.20%) to close at 40,829.59, the Nasdaq rose 193.77 points (1.16%) to close at 16,884.60 and the S&P 500 rose 62.63 points (1.16%) to close at 5,471.05. The Russell 2000 rose 6.37 points (0.30%) to close at 2,097.78, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 585.14 points (1.08%) to close at 54,656.12.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.704%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 25/32, bringing the yield to 4.003%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1919, Austria and the Allied powers signed the Treaty of Saint-Germain, concluding World War I. In 1955, the TV show “Gunsmoke” began airing on CBS, and by the time it ended, in 1975, the series was the longest-running western on American television. In 1974, Guinea-Bissau gained independence from Portugal. In 1984, Alex Trebek debuted as host of the TV game show “Jeopardy!” In 1988, by winning the U.S. Open, Steffi Graf completed the Grand Slam of tennis; she was the first woman to accomplish the feat since Margaret Court in 1970. In 1993, the TV series “The X-Files,” starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, debuted on Fox. In 2000, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Cats” closed after 7,485 performances; it was the longest-running show on Broadway until it was surpassed by Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” in 2006. In 2008, the Large Hadron Collider, the world’s most powerful particle accelerator, conducted its first test operation.
