Tuesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will report the consumer price index for August and Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will reveal the producer price index for August. Thursday, the Census Bureau will report about business inventories for July and retail sales for August, the Labor Department will issue its initial jobless claims report and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow increased 377.19 points (1.19%) to finish trading at 32,151.71, the Nasdaq jumped 250.18 points (2.11%) to close at 12,112.31 and the S&P 500 gained 62.97 points (1.57%) to reach 4,068.27. The Russell 2000 was up 35.94 points (1.95%) to 1,882.84 and the Wilshire 5000 extended 690.24 points (1.72%) to 40,734.92.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 4/32, bringing the yield down to 3.277%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 6/32, bringing the yield down to 3.444%.

For the week ending September 9, the Dow won 2.66%, the Nasdaq spiked 4.14% and the S&P 500 gained 3.67%. The Russell 2000 increased 4.04% and the Wilshire 5000 finished up 3.96%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson sailed down what is now known as the Hudson River. In 1940, near Montignac, France, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings was discovered by four teenagers who stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog down a narrow entrance into a cavern. The 15,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of animal representations, were among the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period. In 1953, Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy, the future 35th president of the United States, married Jacqueline Bouvier in Newport, Rhode Island. Seven years later, the couple became the youngest president and first lady in American history. In 1959, the Soviet Union launched Luna 2, the first space probe to hit the Moon. In 1992, astronaut Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to fly in space, part of the STS-47 Spacelab J mission. In 2003, country music legend Johnny Cash—whose craggy baritone, simple poetics, hard-won integrity and advocacy of the dispossessed transformed him into an American icon—died at age 71.
