In August, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.2%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.5% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3% in August; up 3.2% over the year.
MARKET MIRROR
Wednesday, the Dow rose 124.75 points (‎0.31%) to close at 40,861.71, the Nasdaq rose 369.65 points (‎2.17%) to close at 17,395.53 and the S&P 500 rose 58.61 points (1.07%) to close at 5,554.13. The Russell 2000 rose 6.41 points (0.31%) to close at 2,103.85, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 561.27 points (1.02%) to close at 55,429.91.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.658%. The 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield to 3.969%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1724, French composer of the late-Baroque period Jean-Philippe Rameau died. In 1966, the sitcom “The Monkees,” featuring a pop-rock group fashioned after the Beatles, debuted on television; although canceled after two seasons, the show enjoyed enduring popularity in syndication, backed by such hit songs as “I’m a Believer.” In 1974, Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia was deposed by the Derg, a committee of revolutionary soldiers. In 1977, South African activist Steve Biko died from injuries suffered while in police custody; he subsequently became an international martyr for South African Black nationalism. In 1992, astronaut Mae Jemison became the first African American woman to fly in space, part of the STS-37 Spacelab J mission. In 2003, country music legend Johnny Cash died at age 71.
