Monday, the Dow extended 229.63 points (0.71%) to finish trading at 32,381.34, the Nasdaq gained 154.10 points (1.27%) to close at 12,266.41 and the S&P 500 increased 43.05 points (1.05%) to end the day at 4,110.41. The Russell 2000 increased 23.24 points (1.23%) to close at 1,906.09 and the Wilshire 5000 was up 435.24 points (1.07%) to reach 41,146.44.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 25/32, bringing the yield up to 3.355%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged and the yield increased to 3.506%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1788, the Constitutional Convention decreed that the first federal election was to be held on Wednesday the following February. In 1857, Milton Snavely Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, was born in Pennsylvania. In 1862, Union soldiers found a copy of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s orders detailing the Confederates’ plan for the Antietam campaign near Frederick, Maryland. In 1948, Margaret Chase Smith was elected to the U.S. Senate and became the first woman to serve in both houses of the U.S. Congress. In 1963, Texas-born entrepreneur Mary Kay Ash launched an eponymous cosmetic company in Dallas with her $5,000 of life savings and the help of her 20-year-old son, Richard Rogers. Mary Kay Inc. became a cosmetic empire with revenue of more than $3.5 billion and salespeople in dozens of countries. In 1971, the four-day revolt at the maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility near Buffalo, New York, ended when hundreds of state police officers stormed the complex in a hail of gunfire. Thirty-nine people were killed in the assault, including 29 prisoners and 10 prison guards. In 1996, hip-hop star Tupac Shakur died of gunshot wounds suffered in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting.
