In August, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.6%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 3.7% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3% in August; up 4.3% over the year.

Wednesday, the Dow fell 70.46 points (0.20%) to close at 34,575.53, the Nasdaq rose 39.97 points (0.29%) to close at 13,813.59 and the S&P 500 rose 5.54 (0.12%) to close at 4,467.44. The Russell 2000 fell 14.48 points (0.78%) to close at 1,840.84, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 0.65 points (0.0014%) to close at 44,995.55.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.257%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.346%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1752, Great Britain adopted the Gregorian calendar; the date was moved ahead 11 days (the day after September 2 became September 14). In 1847, U.S. General Winfield Scott’s advance on Mexico City in an unbroken series of victories culminated when he entered Mexico City and ended the military phase of the Mexican American War. In 1879, social reformer Margaret Sanger, a founder of the birth-control movement in the U.S. and an international leader in the field, was born. In 1901, President William McKinley died eight days after being shot in Buffalo, New York. In 1927, Isadora Duncan, a pioneer of modern expressive dance, died in France when her long scarf became entangled in the rear wheel of the car in which she was riding. In 1975, Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint, was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. In 1982, Grace Kelly—an American actor who abandoned her Hollywood career to marry Rainier III, prince of Monaco—died after suffering a stroke and losing control of the car she was driving. In 1985, the sitcom “The Golden Girls” debuted on American television; known for its focus on older women—played by Betty White, Rue McClanahan, Beatrice Arthur and Estelle Getty—and for tackling timely topics. In 1994, acting commissioner of Major League Baseball Bud Selig announced that the remainder of the 1994 season, including the World Series, would be canceled. Players and owners had failed to reach a settlement of the players’ strike begun in August. In 2009, dancer and actor Patrick Swayze, star performer in the box-office hits “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” died at age 57 after battling pancreatic cancer.
