Yesterday, the Dow fell 142.70 points (0.52%) to 27,076.82, the NASDAQ closed 23.17 points (0.28%) lower at 8,153.54, and the S&P 500 lost 9.43 points (0.31%) to finish at 2,997.96. The Russell 2000 was up 6.46 points (0.41%) at 1,584.60, and the Wilshire 5000 decreased 46.58 points (0.15%) to 30,717.92.


The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 27/32, bringing its yield down to 1.845%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond climbed 1 2/32, decreasing its yield to 2.317%.

More than 23,000 men were killed, wounded, or missing. The Rebel advance was ended with heavy losses to both armies. In 1872, Phillip W. Pratt patented a version of the sprinkler system. In 1920, the American Professional Football Association was formed in Canton, Ohio. It was the precursor to the National Football League (NFL). In 1930, construction on Boulder Dam, later renamed Hoover Dam, began in Black Canyon, near Las Vegas. In 1937, at Mount Rushmore, Abraham Lincoln’s face was dedicated. In 1961, the Minnesota Vikings debuted as the new National Football League (NFL) team. In 1983, Vanessa Williams, as Miss New York, became the first black woman to be crowned Miss America.
