The combined value of distributive trade sales and manufacturers’ shipments for July, adjusted for seasonal and trading day differences but not for price changes, was estimated at $1,441.1 billion, up 3.2% from June, but down 1.2% from July 2019, the Census Bureau reported.

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for August, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $537.5 billion, an increase of 0.6% from the previous month, and 2.6% above August 2019. Total sales for the June through August period were up 2.4% from the same period a year ago. Retail trade sales were up 0.1% from July, and 5.1% above last year. Nonstore retailers were up 22.4% from August 2019, while clothing and clothing accessories stores were down 20.4% from last year.

Wednesday, the Dow was up 36.78 points (0.13%) at 28,032.38, the NASDAQ fell 139.86 points (1.25%) to 11,050.47, and the S&P 500 closed 15.71 points (0.46%) lower at 3,385.49. The Russell 2000 gained 14.17 points (0.92%) to finish at 1,552.33, and the Wilshire 5000 decreased 123.27 points (0.35%) to 34,683.13.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 1/32, increasing its yield to 0.697%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 28/32, bringing its yield up to 1.460%.
