Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for August 2024, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $710.8 billion, an increase of 0.1% from the previous month, and up 2.1% from August 2023. Total sales for the June 2024 through August 2024 period were up 2.3% from the same period a year ago. The June 2024 to July 2024 percent change was revised from up 1.0% to up 1.1%.

Tuesday, the Dow fell 15.90 points (0.04%) to close at 41,606.18, the Nasdaq rose 35.93 points (0.20%) to close at 17,628.06 and the S&P 500 rose 1.49 points (0.03%) to close at 5,634.58. The Russell 2000 rose 16.31 points (0.74%) to close at 2,205.48, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 49.71 points (0.09%) to close at 56,393.95.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 24/32, bringing the yield to 3.6451%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 5/32, bringing the yield to 3.960%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1895, Booker T. Washington declared the Atlanta Compromise—a statement on race relations—in a speech at the Atlanta, Georgia Exposition. In 1931, the Japanese army in Manchuria used the pretext of an explosion along its railway to occupy Mukden and to increase its control, within three months, to all of Manchuria. In 1961, UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold died in a plane crash that generated much speculation; a 2017 investigation that “it appears plausible that an external attack or threat may have been a cause of the crash.” In 1970, rock guitarist and singer Jimi Hendrix—who fused American traditions of blues, jazz, rock and soul with techniques of British avant-garde rock to redefine the electric guitar in his own image—died of an overdose in London. In 2014, Scottish voters rejected a referendum that would have made Scotland an independent country. In 2020, lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, died at age 87.
