In the week ending September 14, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 219,000, a decrease of 12,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 231,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 227,500, a decrease of 3,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 231,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.09% for the week ending September 19, down from last week when it averaged 6.20%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 7.19%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.15%, down from last week when it averaged 5.27%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.54%.

Thursday, the Dow rose 522.09 points (1.26%) to close at 42,025.19, the Nasdaq rose 440.68 points (2.51%) to close at 18,013.98 and the S&P 500 rose 95.38 points (1.70%) to close at 5,713.64. The Russell 2000 rose 46.37 points (2.10%) to close at 2,252.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 979.27 (1.74%) to close at 57,242.99.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.715%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.050%.
