Wednesday, the Dow fell 76.85 points (0.22%) to close at 34,440.88 the Nasdaq fell 209.06 points (1.53%) to close at 13,469.13 and the S&P 500 fell 41.75 points (0.94%) to close at 4,402.20. The Russell 2000 fell 16.43 points (0.90%) to close at 1,810.10, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 406.56 points (0.91%) to close at 44,335.54.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.414%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.45o.

ON THIS DATE: In 1931, the Bank of England dropped the gold standard, and the pound sterling promptly lost 28% of its value. In 1937, English writer J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” a coming-of-age fantasy that became a classic, was published. In 1957, the TV series “Perry Mason,” which was based on a mystery series by Erle Stanley Gardner, debuted and became hugely popular, especially noted for Raymond Burr’s portrayal of the title character. In 1972, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law in the Philippines, beginning a period of harsh authoritarian rule. In 1981, Belize gained its independence from the U.K. In 2001, the Dow Jones industrial average posted its largest weekly loss of 14.3% since the Great Depression. In 2004, the band Green Day released its iconic American Idiot, which later won a Grammy Award for best rock album and was adapted into a rock opera. In 2013, Al-Shabaab militants launched a terrorist attack on the Westgate shopping center in Nairobi, which ended three days later and left more than 65 people dead, including Ghanian poet and novelist Kofi Awoonor.
