Monday, the Dow rose 43.04 points (0.13%) to close at 34,006.88, the Nasdaq rose 59.51 points (0.45%) to close at 13,271.32 and the S&P 500 rose 17.38 points (0.40%) to close at 4,337.44. The Russell 2000 rose 7.74 points (0.44%) to close at 1,784.24, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 172.27 points (0.41%) to close at 43,662.41.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.536%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 1 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.654.

ON THIS DATE: In 1687, during the bombardment of the Acropolis in Athens by Venetian forces, part of the Parthenon was destroyed in a powder explosion. In 1898, George Gershwin, one of the most significant and popular American composers, was born. In 1960, the first in a historic series of televised debates was broadcast (and seen by some 85 to 120 million viewers) between U.S. presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard M. Nixon. In 1969, the sitcom “The Brady Bunch” premiered on ABC. Also in 1969, the Beatles released Abbey Road, their last-recorded album (Let It Be, though mostly recorded earlier than Abbey Road, was released in 1970). In 1971, Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer won his 20th game of the year, becoming the fourth Orioles pitcher to win 20 games in the 1971 season and the Orioles the first team in 51 years to field four 20-game winners. In 2007, music producer Phil Spector’s trial for the murder of actor Lana Clarkson ended in a mistrial when the jury could not come to a unanimous verdict. Spector was retried and convicted in 2009. In 2019, French politician Jacques Chirac, who served as president of France from 1995 to 2007, died at age 86.
