ECONOMIC EVENTS
New orders for manufactured durable goods in August, up five of the last six months, increased $500 million or 0.2% to $284.7 billion, the Census Bureau reported. This followed a 5.6% July decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.4%. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 0.7%. Machinery, up four of the last five months, led the increase, $0.2 billion or 0.5% to $37.8 billion.

Wednesday, the Dow fell 68.61 points (0.20%) to close at 33,550.27, the Nasdaq rose 29.24 points (0.22%) to close at 13,092.85 and the S&P 500 rose 0.98 points (0.02%) to close at 4,274.51. The Russell 2000 rose 17.29 points (0.98%) to close at 1,778.90, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 60.09 points (0.14%) to close at 43,086.38.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.616%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.721%.
