worries about the health of the Chinese economy and another big sell-off in
drug makers pushed the stock market back toward its lowest level of the year,
according to the Associated Press. The Dow closed 312.78 points (1.92%) lower
at 16,001.89, the NASDAQ fell 142.53 points (3.04%) to 4,543.97, and the
S&P 500 took a 49.57-points (2.57%) dive to 1,881.77. The Russell 2000 lost
45.60 points (4.01%) to finish at 1,090.57, and the Wilshire 5000 plummeted
553.35 points (2.72%) to 19,760.18.
On the NYSE,
3.2 billion shares traded, with a nearly 9 to 1 lead for advancers. On the
NASDAQ, nearly 2.8 billion shares changed hands, with declining issues
outnumbering advancing issues more than 5 to 1.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 20/32,
bringing its yield down to 2.094%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond
climbed 1 19/32, decreasing its yield to 2.878%.
