The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index declined again in September, following decreases in both July and August. The Index now stands at 109.3 (1985=100), down from 115.2 in August. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—fell to 143.4 from 148.9 last month. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—fell to 86.6 from 92.8.
Market Mirror
Tuesday, the Dow fell 569.38 points (1.63%) to 34,299.99, the Nasdaq lost 423.29 points (2.83%) to finish at 14,546.68, and the S&P 500 closed 90.48 points (2.04%) lower at 4,352.63. The Russell 2000 decreased 51.22 points (2.25%) to 2,229.78, and the Wilshire 5000 plunged 986.07 points (2.13%) to 45,313.66.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 6/32, increasing its yield to 1.545%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond fell 2 24/32, bringing its yield up to 2.099%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1789, a regular army was established by the U.S. War Department with several hundred men. In 1943, U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Italian Marchal Pietro Badoglio signed an armistice aboard the British ship Nelson. In 1977, Eva Shain became the first woman to officiate a heavyweight title boxing match. In 1983, “A Chorus Line” with performance number 3,389 became the longest running show on Broadway. In 1988, Stacy Allison of Portland, Oregon, became the first American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1995, voting rights advocate Willie Velasquez was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Velasquez and the organizations he founded are credited with dramatically increasing political awareness and participation among the Hispanic communities of the Southwestern United States. In 2008, after Congress failed to pass a $700 billion bank bailout plan, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 777.68 points—at the time, the largest single-day point loss in its history.
