Wednesday, the Dow increased 548.75 points (1.88%) to end trading at 29,683.74, the Nasdaq gained 222.13 points (2.05%) to reach 11,051.636 and the S&P 500 was up 71.75 (1.97%) to close at 3,719.04. The Russell 2000 gained 52.73 points (3.17%) to close at 1,715.24 and the Wilshire 5000 increased 810.42 points (2.23%) to close at 37,165.21.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 1 7/32 bringing the yield down to 3.731%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 2 3/32 bringing the yield down to 3.687%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1789, A regular army was established by the U.S. War Department with several hundred men. In 1907, the singing cowboy, Gene Autry, was born in Texas. In 1957, the New York Giants of Major League Baseball played their last game in New York City, at the Polo Grounds, in upper Manhattan, before the team was relocated to San Francisco the next year. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy nationalized the Mississippi National guard in response to city officials defying federal court orders to racially integrate schools. The orders had been to enroll James Meredith, a black student, at the University of Mississippi. In 1988, Stacy Allison became first American woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. In 2008, after Congress failed to pass a $700 billion bank bailout plan, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 777.68 points—at the time, the largest single-day point loss in its history.
