Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week. Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release the U.S. employment report for September.
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow rose 137.89 points (0.33%) to close at 42,313.00, the Nasdaq fell 70.70 points (0.39%) to close at 18,119.59 and the S&P 500 fell 7.20 points (0.13%) to close at 5,738.17. The Russell 2000 rose 14.83 points (0.67%) to close at 2,224.70, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 38.83 points (0.07%) to close at 57,418.64.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 4/32, bringing the yield to 3.757%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.109%.

In the week ending September 27, the Dow rose 0.59%, the Nasdaq rose 0.95% and the S&P 500 gained 0.52%. The Russell 2000 lost 0.14%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 0.56% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1938, the Munich Agreement, in which Britain’s Neville Chamberlain encouraged Britain and France to appease Adolf Hitler’s demands in the hope of preventing World War II, was reached. In 1949, the Berlin airlift officially ended after the Western Allied powers delivered more than two million tons of food, fuel machinery and other supplies to West Berlin, which had been cut off from the West during the Soviet blockade of Berlin. In 1954, the USS “Nautilus,” the world’s first nuclear-powered vessel, was commissioned by the U.S. Navy. In 1955, actor James Dean died in a car crash as he drove to a car rally in Salinas, California. In 1965, in Indonesia, a group of army conspirators known as the September 30th Movement began an abortive coup, and by the following morning they had kidnapped and murdered six army generals; the movement claimed that it had seized power to forestall a coup against President Sukarno by a council of generals.
