Tuesday, the Dow fell 626.15 points (1.51%) to close at 40,936.93, the Nasdaq fell 577.33 points (3.26%) to close at 17,136.30 and the S&P 500 fell 119.47 points (2.12%) to close at 5,528.93. The Russell 2000 fell 68.42 points (3.09%) to close at 2,149.21, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,244.32 points (2.20%) to close at 55,310.13.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 28/32, bringing the yield to 3.835%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1 24/32, bringing the yield to 4.122%.

In 2014, entertainer Joan Rivers—who first gained fame in the 1960s as a nightclub and television comic—died in New York City. In 2016, Mother Teresa, founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity and winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for Peace, was canonized by Pope Francis I.
