Tuesday, the Dow lost 198.78 points (0.57%) to close at 34,443.19, the Nasdaq lost 148.48 points (1.06%) to close at 13,872.47 and the S&P 500 lost 31.35 points (0.70%) to close at 4,465.48. The Russell 2000 lost 6.17 points (0.33%) to close at 1,874.28, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index lost 289.66 points (0.64%) to close at 45,056.88.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.284%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 25/32, bringing the yield to 4.355%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1822, Dom Pedro I declared the independence of Brazil from Portugal. In 1860, folk painter Grandma Moses, who was internationally popular for her documentation of rural life in the U.S., was born. In 1901, with the signing of the Boxer Protocol, the Boxer Rebellion; a violent peasant uprising, that had unsuccessfully sought to drive all foreigners out of China, officially ended. In 1963, the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened in Canton, Ohio, and its first inductees included Jim Thorpe and George Halas. In 1977, President Jimmy Carter and Panamanian dictator Omar Torrijos signed a treaty agreeing to transfer control of the Panama Canal from the U.S. to Panama at the end of the 20th century. In 1979, ESPN, a cable network dedicated to sports, debuted on television. In 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur was shot by an unknown assailant and died six days later. Shakur’s killer remains unidentified. In 2005, amid low voter turnout and allegations of irregularities, Hosni Mubarak won Egypt’s first multicandidate presidential election to remain in office.
