New orders for manufactured durable goods in June increased $5.0 billion, or 1.9%, to $272.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported. This increase, the eighth in the last nine months, followed a 0.8% May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.3%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.4%. Transportation equipment, up three consecutive months, led the increase at $4.5 billion, or 5.1%, to $92.7 billion.

Wednesday, the Dow gained 436.05 points (1.37%) to close at 32,197.59, the Nasdaq boosted 469.85 points (4.06%) to 12,032.42 and the S&P 500 extended 102.27 points (2.61%) to close at 4,023.32. The Russell 2000 increased 45.02 points (2.49%) to 1,850.27 and the Wilshire 5000 accrued 1,060.27 points (2.72%) to close at 40,081.99.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note increased 2/32, bringing its yield down to 2.782%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 29/32, bringing its yield up to 3.063%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1750, composer Johann Sebastian Bach died at age 65. In 1821, Peru declared its independence from Spain. In 1868, the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution—which granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans, including slaves who had been emancipated after the Civil War—entered into force. In 1879, Lucy Burns, a suffragist who formed the National Woman’s Party with Alice Paul, was born. She picketed the White House for women’s suffrage and was arrested six times. In 1914, using the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand as a pretext to present Serbia with an ultimatum, Austria-Hungary declared war on the Slavic country, sparking World War I. In 1932, during the Great Depression, President Herbert Hoover ordered the U.S. Army under General Douglas MacArthur to evict by force the Bonus Marchers from the nation’s capital. In 1976, an earthquake in the industrial city of Tangshan, China, killed more than 240,000 people. In 1991, Spanish cyclist Miguel Indurain won his first of five consecutive Tour de France titles. In 2016, 95 years after women won the right to vote, former Secretary of State, Senator and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton made history by accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for president to become the first woman to lead a major U.S. political party.
